the state of union

Today is 1.29.03, the time is 10:34 a.m.

Throughout the 20th century, small groups of men seized control of great nations, built armies and arsenals, and set out to dominate the weak and intimidate the world. In each case, their ambitions of cruelty and murder had no limit.

Bush knows himself better than we thought.

Reading over the text of Bush's speech last night, it becomes painfully clear what he's not saying.

He says he's going to strengthen social services by making his "faith-based initiative" and "citizen service" programs. Yeah, so he wants churchs and volunteers to do all the work. I can tell you, that doesn't sound right to me. I've looked into doing Americorps. Basically, one is expected to live on about $10,000/yr. stipend money to do rather difficult social service work for one year. (I can barely make ends meet on $18,000/yr.) Not only does this make the program less that economically ideal (for the individual, that is), but it also leads to a rather high turnover rate--a constantly green group of people in a field that thrives somewhat on experience. The poor, disabled, and disenfranchised are probably saying, Gee, thanks for all your help.

As for his tax cuts...since when have corporations deserved tax cuts--many corporations don't even really pay taxes. Of course, they are already receiving tons of welfare. I guess, i'm for those on welfare not brunting a huge tax burden, but I guess I'm just prejudiced against corporations. I mean, god, look at their crime rate. Look at how dirty their yards are.

I could go on, but I'm already clinically depressed. No sense digging the hole deeper.

The war drum is beating, and my stomach is churning this bitter tasting acid.
